How It Works (MD)
After Effects + Photoshop
This is a motion graphics project that I worked on for The Proactiv Company. Our team was asked to produce a “how to use" video with a social media vibe. This was a fun task because of all the moving parts it required, such as the set building, filming the video and laying in the motion graphics. Working closely with my two teammates, we were able to bring all of the many parts together in under a month and on time for our deadline.
I was responsible for a large portion of this project: everything from building a fake wall to lighting and maintaining our set, to creating the majority of the motion graphics that you see in it. I don’t think I’ll ever forget taking over an out-of-the-way conference room, building a fake bathroom wall out of poster-board and laminate tiles, then setting up all our hot lights and other camera equipment in that small space. After the all the setup was done, we were able to talk Marysa, the greatest office-mate of all time, into being our model and acting very silly in front of a camera over and over just so that we could get the shot we needed; a huge thank you to her for all her amazing work. It was a ton of effort that we all put in, but I’d like to think that we had good laugh while we did it.
Once all of the shooting shenanigans were wrapped up and edited, I was able to begin work on the motion graphics portion of the project. I had a ton of copy that was required in the final piece, while the video had to be under a minute long and had to keep the viewers’ attention. Breaking up the information was vital to this project and provided a number of great opportunities to have some fun with the graphics and adding some life to the project. Along with dividing out the information, keeping a consistent style to the text and graphics helped tremendously with getting our message across while staying on brand.
After all was said and done, I am very pleased with what our team was able to accomplish. I particularly enjoyed watching this project grow from scribbles on a page to us all jumping around sounding silly in a little room, to graphics getting laid in and doing their thing on screen, to a finished project all shiny and new. It’s a feeling I never get tired of.
